Okapuka Game Reserve

At the foot of the Otjihavera Mountains, rolling grasslands, rocky hills and wildlife unfold beneath Namibia’s vast skies.

A landscape shaped by water and wilderness

Where Namibia’s highlands meet the plains

North of Windhoek in Namibia’s Khomas Region, Okapuka Game Reserve lies at the foot of the Otjihavera Mountains.

The reserve forms part of Namibia’s central highlands, with rolling grasslands, rocky hills, thorn trees and dry, stony riverbeds creating a landscape that continually changes as you move through it.

The seasonal Otjihavera River flows after good rains, while water troughs provide important drinking points for wildlife through the long dry periods.

Wildlife

A remarkable variety of species

Giraffe, plains zebra, oryx, springbok, warthog, wildebeest, white rhino, leopard and bat-eared fox are among the wildlife found here.

Waterbuck, blesbok, sable antelope and eland add to the variety of life across the reserve.

Through Emily’s lens

The landscape is part of the encounter

Emily’s photographs move between the scale of the landscape and the wildlife within it — animals feeding together on the dry plains, zebra beneath the trees and the quieter moments that are so easily missed when attention is focused only on the headline species.

Birdlife

Look beyond the larger animals

Okapuka is also home to an impressive variety of birdlife. Ostrich, guineafowl, francolin, hornbills and lilac-breasted rollers can be encountered here, alongside kori bustards and numerous raptors.

Smaller species, including Melba finches, are another reminder that some of the pleasure of safari comes simply from slowing down and noticing what is around you.

A moment remembered

“It was so special to see wildebeest and warthog feeding peacefully on the lawns at night.”

These are often the memories that endure: not necessarily a dramatic sighting, but an unhurried moment at the end of the day, watching wildlife quietly carrying on around you.
