My story here began
in the 1960s.
I first visited Gorongosa with my parents in the late 1960s. I remember crossing the river on a rope-drawn pontoon, entering a vast wilderness that my father captured on cine film.
At the main camp, the thatched rondavels seemed enormous to me. In the evenings, the warden gave fascinating slide shows and talks. Even then, I knew where my passion would take me: working, studying and living in Africa’s great wildlife areas.
Following decades of civil war, Gorongosa is now the setting for an extraordinary restoration effort. For me, its story is deeply personal. I invite you to discover this remarkable part of Mozambique with me.

From the savannah to Mount Gorongosa’s Afromontane forest, birding brings a fascinating variety of habitats into one journey.
A particular draw is the mountain’s distinctive subspecies of green-headed oriole, recognised by its white wing panel. While the species occurs elsewhere in East Africa, this local form makes Mount Gorongosa especially compelling for keen birders.
