Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary

Wildlife, conservation and the landscapes of Namibia.

The landscape

Wild Namibia, just beyond Windhoek

Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary, east of Windhoek in Namibia’s Khomas Region, lies within the beautiful central Namibian highlands.

Rocky hills, open grassland, savanna vegetation and scattered trees create a varied landscape that supports an extraordinary diversity of wildlife.

A remarkable diversity of species

African wild dog, caracal, chacma baboon, zebra, springbok, eland, elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah and brown hyena are among the species found here.

The area also has outstanding birdlife, with more than 500 species recorded, including ostriches, eagles, owls, vultures, starlings, Monteiro’s hornbill and red-crested bustard.

“Exploring wilderness and observing nature in all its splendour is what I love and enjoy most.”

Conservation

More than a wildlife encounter

Naankuse is about more than encountering wildlife.

The Naankuse Foundation works to protect animals affected by human-wildlife conflict. Its rapid response work includes rescuing animals — often predators — and providing veterinary care and rehabilitation, with the primary aim of safely returning them to the wild wherever possible.

This combination of wildlife, conservation and the opportunity to understand the challenges facing Namibia’s animals makes Naankuse a particularly rewarding place to experience.

Experience shapes every story

Emily Chavrier was born in Kenya into a family with a lifelong passion for wildlife. Her first safari adventures took place in the National Parks and Conservancies of Kenya, where her enduring love of the African wilderness began.

Her writing for Plains of Africa comes from experiencing these landscapes and their wildlife first-hand.

Knowledge built through experience — not simply from reading about a destination.

Safari isn’t only about the headline species

Some of the pleasures of time in the African wilderness are the smaller encounters: birdlife on the track, changing landscapes and the unexpected moments that happen between the celebrated sightings.
