Tsavo West
Rocky ridges, volcanic hills, red earth, vast wildlife and far-reaching views — Tsavo West is safari country shaped on an immense scale.
Tsavo West feels more sculpted.
Here, the land rises and falls around you. Dry bush and sweeping savanna give way to rocky ridges, volcanic hills and great stretches of open country.
Then the landscape changes again. At Mzima Springs, clear water emerges within this otherwise rugged environment, creating a very different habitat for hippo, birdlife and other wildlife.
Buffalo, elephant, rhino, lion, leopard, giraffe and antelope move through this immense landscape — but in Tsavo West, the scenery is every bit as much a part of the experience as the animals themselves.
The great herds of Tsavo West
Some landscapes are defined by what moves through them.
Tsavo West is home to great herds of buffalo and elephant, moving through dry bush, open grassland and the park’s distinctive red earth.
Black rhino, lion, leopard, giraffe and numerous antelope species add to the extraordinary variety of wildlife found here.
But this is not a landscape that gives everything away at once. Part of its appeal is watching, waiting and allowing the bush to reveal what is there.
Wild space. Room to roam.
From above, the scale of Tsavo becomes unmistakable.
Elephants move across red earth and green bush with space stretching away around them — a reminder that the real luxury of wilderness is not simply what you see, but how much room there still is for wildlife to live as wildlife.
In Tsavo West, the landscape is not a backdrop. It is part of the story.
Kilimanjaro in the distance
One of Tsavo West’s most memorable qualities is the way the landscape keeps unfolding.
On clear days, Mount Kilimanjaro can appear beyond the nearer ridges — its distant summit rising above the green wilderness and cloud.
It is a very different kind of safari moment. Nothing is close. Nothing needs to be.
Sometimes the sense of distance is exactly what makes a landscape unforgettable.
Born in Kenya into a family with a lifelong passion for wildlife, Emily’s first safari experiences were in Kenya’s national parks and conservancies.
Tsavo West is part of a landscape she has experienced personally — from its wildlife and red earth to its extraordinary views and changing terrain.
The photographs on this page come from Emily’s own journey through Tsavo West.
Space for all.
